What have you heard about the Chili?

I was standing in the line to pay for my lunch in the cafeteria yesterday afternoon with a grilled buffalo chicken wrap a bottle of water a diet coke and a cup of this weeks chili selection, a dark turkey mole chili.

The lady at the register looks down at my tray, punches a few things in and says to me, “What have you heard about the chili?”

A little baffled, I responded with “It’s the chili of the week, it’s got to be good.”  And her completely confused look lead me to believe that perhaps I had heard her wrong.

“No, the killings, what have you heard about the killings?” She asked, somewhat perturbed that she had to restate and clarify.

“Um,” looking around nervously for danger, “what killings?”

And she proceeds to tell me about Virginia Tech.  Of course, it was the first I had heard about it (I don’t surf google news during the day anymore, I have plenty of work to do to keep me busy), but when I went out into the eating area where they have a 30 ft television wall tuned to CNN 24/7 I got a full dose.

If it isn’t enough to have thousands of young people in harms way in the middle east, now they’re having to look over their shoulders in the class room as well, with anger in their midst, armed to the teeth.
